  • Went from Europe out to the Mediterranean Sea (B).
  • The lands were made up of lots of peninsulas and islands of all sizes
  • Being surrounded mostly by the sea protected from attacks, they were able to trade and communicate, and they built a strong navy protection
  • At different points the civilization reached parts of asia, and into italy sicily

  • conquered the persian empire
  • built and ruled a vast empire
  • helped spread greek culture throughout his empire

2.Socates
  • Greek philosopher
  • Examined the role of humans in the universe
  • invented the socratic method
  • influenced all greek philosophers after him
  • 470 b.c- 399 b.c

B. Advancements
1. Inventions (progress, transportation, improvements of life)
  • Athens and Sparta were the leaders of culture and military advancements. (B)
  • the Ionian Sea helped Greece prosper in trade and transportation
  • trade allowed Greek ideas spread and allowed Greeks to learn from other cultures
  • The Greeks created the alphabet and began using coins for money.

*Greeks had agoras (out door market places)
*Greeks had a Parthenon, a Greek temple dedicated for the gods and goddesses
*3 different types of style columns, the Doric order, the ionic order and the Corinthian order.
